Last week I was supply teaching in a grade 2 and 3 class and used your wonderful book. My friend bought the book for me when she visited Sitka on a cruise last summer. It is signed by both of you, as well as by Tango. The children loved the story and especially the pictures. They kept asking if it was “real”. I read to the part where Brady discovers that the kayak has floated away and then I asked them to write their predictions for the ending of the story. Here are a few of their ideas – Brady will go into the water and retrieve the kayak, they will camp in one of the bunkers and wait for someone to come and get them, Brady will throw a rope out to the kayak, Brady will build a raft and go out to get the kayak – and many of them did predict that Tango would swim out to get the boat. They were very excited when they found out that they were right! We got some great writing from this activity and the children really enjoyed seeing the beautiful photographs of a place that is not familiar to them. ( They live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.) I am going to show the book to the school librarian because she is always looking for new materials that the children will enjoy.
